"Governor eliminates child care for 80,000 children and jeopardizes employment for tens of thousands of working parents and child care providers.
On Friday, October 8, 2010 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger used his draconian tactics to hurt working families across the State of California by eliminating CalWORKs Stage 3 child care services to put money in his “rainy day” fund.
This single “blue pencil” action pushes us even closer to becoming a welfare state despite the fact that California has worked diligently over the last 15 years to move families from welfare to work.  The Governor’s attempt to balance the budget on the backs of poor people will most likely result in thousands of California residents being forced on to unemployment and welfare."

For Those Who Could Not Read It Before...

Despair

Married Prince Charming and this is my Happily NEVER After

He had it all and he was mine.  Everyone envied our love.  We were the "it" couple and then...

We found out we were having a baby... He became distant... He became a dictator... We wed

The dictator made me his puppet... I trusted him

The dictator and now ruler made me his slave

I was a slave to his every whim

I was allowed NO happiness

Happiness was frowned upon

The Princess had no where to turn since he banished her family and friends from their kingdom

She was left broken and afraid

She thought there was no way out but death

She did the worst in order to leave him but it backfired

He exiled her from their kingdom

By this time the child was a year old

He brought a wench to live with him there

But they were unable to maintain their lifestyle and his kingdom was over thrown

He and his wench also became peasants as the Princess and her family had become

Only the Princess was living a just and happy life even in her poverty

The once Prince was living in a nicer village but the wench made him cut ties from all old friends and family

He was no longer to speak with the woman who raised him as her son or to the twin sister who came out of their mother's womb before him

He obeyed her

There is much more to this story but I cannot bear to write another word of it just now.

See this once Prince now Slime has been coming after the Princess with stones and daggers. He will not rest until she is below him again and in misery and in his hold

This Princess is growing weary of fighting.

I have a son to protect so I must go on..... Throw those stones coward!!!!!!!!

Pierce me with those daggers!!!!!! You will not take me! I am not yours to toy with!!!!!

I am not yours to keep!!!!!

I Am Not Yours!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay away Coward and Ingrate!

Keep away and let me rest peacefully

Take your Debts

Take your Sorrow

Take your Anger

Take it all with you and let me be freed from your grasp!!!!!!

Freed from our treaty

Sign me off! I am no longer yours!

I am someone else's Princess and they want me back!  They want me whole! And they want me at peace!

Do not think of my child as yours for you have not cared for him not one day.  You vile vermin! Stay away from us and get help! Ask the Lord for forgiveness and stay away from that Wench! She is no good for you! Your mother, father, sister, and brother wish only the best for you. I once cared for your sanity and health but you are no longer a worry for me! I cannot care for you while you destroy Me, My Son, Your Family, and Mine.

You are worthless!

You are deeper that the deepest scum.  You are worth nothing.  You are dirty and sick!

You once looked beautiful on the outside but now your rotting soul is creeping onto your skin and your true fresh is starting to appear.

May God have mercy on you.

Leave me, Demon!

I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ!

Lord keep me safe, keep me whole, I love you... please protect my son and family.  Please guard us from this evil.  Please Lord, come down and hold us in your arms.  Please Lord Jesus! Please help me! Please help us! Please, Lord, Please!

I love you, Amen.

Wandering Dialogue Rendition

I hated this dialougue when it only said He, She, and Him and had no direction.  I tried my best to make sense of it.  This is my first rendition of it.

Scene 1

Son walks in
Mother walks towards son as she says her line

Mother: Where have you been?
Son: Wandering around.
Mother: Wandering around. I don’t know why you can’t be a man; you just wait till the army gets a hold of you, young man.
Father: They’ll make a man of you.
Mother: Straighten you out.
Father: A little regimentation.
Mother: Regulation.
Father: Specification.
Mother: Indoctrination.
Father: Boredom.
Mother: You’ll get up and go to bed.
Father: Drill, march.
Mother: Take orders.
Father: Fight.
Mother: Do what they tell you.
Father: Keep in step.
Mother: Do your part.
Father: Kill you a man.
Mother: You’ll be a better person to live with, believe me. As a matter of fact your father
and I are getting tired of having you around.
Father: Looking after you.
Mother: Making your bed.
Father: Keeping you out of trouble.
Mother: How old are you, anyway?
Son: Sixteen
Father: Sixteen, well, my goodness.
Mother: Shouldn’t you be drafted before long?
Son: Two years.
Mother: You just better toe the mark.

Scene 2

Recruiter walks up to Candidate who walks up to Recruiter

Recruiter: How long at your present address?
Candidate: Six months.
Recruiter: Any previous experience as an apprentice?
Candidate: No sir.
Recruiter: Where did you live before that?
Candidate: I was just wandering around.
Recruiter: Not good enough; draft status?
Candidate: Well, I haven’t been called but...
Recruiter: We like fighters on our team, fellow.
Candidate: Well, I’m a conscientious…

Scene 3

Nurse grabs Candidate and pulls him down to sit on the chair

Nurse: Sit down. Roll up your sleeve. Take off your shirt. Stick out your tongue. Bend over, open your mouth, make a fist, read the top line. Cough. (Candidate coughs) Very good.
Candidate: Thank you.
Nurse: Perfect Specimen. Nurse looks down at writing pad and checks off acceptable and faces away
Candidate: I do a considerable amount of walking. Stands proud but relaxes and sits down for next line

Scene 4

Both men sit casually

Friend: I don’t follow you.
Man: I don’t believe in war.
Friend: There’s no danger of war. Our country is never an aggressor.
Man: But armies, see, I don’t believe in it.

Scene 5

Both men stand abruptly

Recruiter: Do you love your country?
Candidate: No more than any other, the ones I’ve seen.
Recruiter: That’s treason.
Candidate: I’m sorry. He sits down ashamed
Recruiter: Quiet all right; we’ll take you. He turns away

Scene 6

Son stands up and walks away angry as he says his line

Son: I won’t go.
Father: Service is compulsory. Turns to face son
Son turns around to face Father
Son: It’s my right.
Father: You’ll learn.
Son: I don’t believe in killing people. Points to his chest and takes a few steps towards his father
Father: For freedom? Takes a step towards son
Son: No.
Father: For love? Takes a step towards son
Son: No.
Father: For money? Takes a step towards son
Son: No.
Father: We’ll teach you. Stops looking at son
Son: I know, but I won’t. Takes a step towards father
Father: You’ll learn. Walks away from son
Son: I won’t! Takes another step towards father
Father: You’re going. Turns in rage towards son
Son: I’m not. Crosses arms and looks at back wall with chin up
Father: You’ll see. Glares at son
Son: I’m sure. Looks confident
Father: You’ll see. Glares and walks towards son
Son: I’m flatfooted. Looks like he’s thinking and trying to get out of trouble
Father: You’ll do. Walks towards son
Son: I’m queer. Does a valley girl stance with wrist up
Father: Get lost. Dismisses son and walks to far right side

Scene 7

Woman is looking for her way to the train station. Woman turns and walks towards Man

Woman: I’m lost. She looks lost and sweet
Man: I’m sorry.
Woman: Aren’t you lost?
Man: I wasn’t going anyplace in particular.
Woman: That’s unnatural.
Man: I was just wandering.

Scene 8

Wife argues with husband as he is sitting down watching tv. Mood is anger

Wife: What will become of you?
Husband: I hadn’t thought of it. Her voice is irritating him so he tilts his head away
Wife: You don’t believe in anything. She raises her hands in frustration and walks to the left and stand still for next scene

Scene 9

Patient: But you see, I do.
Therapist: I see.
Patient: It’s just that no one else seems to believe – not really.
Therapist: I see. Stands and rubs chin as he stares out of a window
Patient: Like this pride in country.
Therapist: I see.
Patient: And this pride in blood.
Therapist: I see.
Patient: It just seems that pride is such a pointless thing; I can’t believe in killing someone for it.

Scene 10

Husband has hand in pants and is watching tv again

Wife: Oh, my goodness, honey, it isn’t killing; it’s merely nudging out of the way…
Husband: But we don’t need it.
Wife: Think of our position, think of me, think of the children. She’s nagging
Husband: I am. He’s tired and annoyed
Wife: You’re shiftless, is what it is. She’s calling him lazy
Husband: I’m really quite happy; I don’t know why. He says first line content and looks at her a little disgusted for the second.
Wife: Well how do you think I feel? Says line with attitude and then faces away
Husband: Not too well really. He is disappointed with himself

Scene 11

Boss: Nothing to worry about.
Secretary: Yes sir.
Boss: Thank you.
Secretary: And that’s all for the morning; Mr. Trader is on line six.
Boss: Thank you; send Wheeler in.

Sociology on Status

Growing up I quickly caught on that you were labeled poor if you didn’t own brand name clothes.  You were middle class if you had the outdated brands and upper class if you had anything you asked for.  When I entered the working world, I realized that it was much broader than that.  Wealth depended on much more than money but also emotional and mental well being, stability, support group, network, family, schooling, and luxuries.  I will show how norms and taboos also will determine a person’s class.
The people in my case study will be given a surname to protect their privacy.  The individual I chose for this assignment is my dear friend John Garcia.  I will dissect his life to come up with an overall status.  During our interview, he seemed very protective and bland in his descriptions of life.  It took me a while to get his confidence so that he could open up and get deep in conversation.  I asked him if he could be the center of my assignment when I first heard of it at the beginning of the semester.  He agreed, but still wonders why I chose him and not someone else like family.  My reason for choice in subject is because I want to get to know him and why he is the way he is.  How his social influences, such as family, socioeconomic standing and education have developed his guarded mentality.  I thought the best way to do this is by telling him that it’s for school so he agreed.  The first few interviews were short and in person.  The questioning was deeper when I emailed him one day about his life but still he wouldn’t answer more than a few sentences.  Finally, he poured out his heart to me in the last few days of May, I acquired greater insight into his thoughts and true feelings, which is stuck and controlled.
From my experience most lower-middle class individuals feel this way.  They feel as if they have so many roles to play and so many people to please but not enough time, energy or sometimes money to do so.  John is going through an identity crisis; he is experiencing role conflict and therefore does not know who he is because he feels that he lives to please everyone but himself.  The following are some of the roles he plays:

Therapist
Caregiver
Spiritual Guide
Maid
Chauffeur
Lover
Friend
Son
Christian
Rebel
Tutor
Comedian
Student
Volunteer
Artist
Overall Scapegoat

John’s story is one that cannot be construed in the confines of this assignment, but I shall attempt to give an adequate synopsis.  There is much more dept in him that I will keep getting to know as the years go by but for the purpose of this assignment I will only cover what is necessary to describe my reasoning behind labeling him lower middle class.
John is a 21 year old Mexican male born and raised in Pacoima, California.  His family has never moved farther than 5 miles from this place.  The most travel he has done is going to Mexico or Texas and that is only to visit family.  He has only gone a handful of times in his life.  He was raised as a Seventh Day Adventist but strayed away at the age of 14 and hasn’t come back to his beliefs until just recently yet he still doubts that there is a God.  John’s family has always struggled to make ends meet and is recently getting help from the state to pay for housing.  This is one of the role conflicts for him, the fact that he has to go to school fulltime to keep the housing for his family.  His family puts a lot of stress on him because they need him to be a good student or have a good job for them to survive.  He feels as if he is always being picked on and he doesn’t blame people because he wasted away most of his life failing in school and getting into trouble.
John’s 8th grade year, he began obsessing over death and different ways to end his life.  He had always been bullied about his weight because he is heavy set.  By this time, he began to speak up and defend himself but his grades began to drop.  Before entering High School he had already experimented with sex, drugs and alcohol.  His father was never home even when he was a child because he worked 3 jobs to support his family.  John explained with sadness and anger that his oldest brother, Peter, from his dad’s previous marriage came to reclaim his father’s money.  All their lives John and his older brother and sister, Christopher and Mary, always received hand-me-downs from their older brother because “Peter needs a laptop.  Peter needs name brand clothes.  Peter needs books.  Peter needs an iPod.  Peter this, Peter That.”  John explained that he and his siblings received hand-me-downs from distant cousins that had 2nd hand unbranded clothes.  Unfortunately, according to the U.S., John and his family aren’t lower class but instead part of the middle class because at least they have a home, clothes, food, schooling, jobs but from the sound of it I would have labeled him lower class right away.
While interviewing John, I realized that he doesn’t see a bright future for himself.  He sees himself as his family sees him which is a as a bum and mooch who will never amount to anything.  He’s heard it on a daily basis since a very young age but he has also heard what great potential he has from friends, family, and teachers.  For some reason he only hears the negative now that he says his family has given up on him so therefore he has decided to give up on himself.  John has such a small group of support from his friends only that he can’t believe it when we say he has what it takes to move out of his status and break the mold.  He feels like giving up because he can never seem to progress.  It saddens me to see that look in his face; the look of despair and complete loss at life, a complete and utter failure.
Unfortunately, most of the U.S. is middle class because they aren’t poor enough to receive government assistance but not wealthy enough to dig themselves out of the ditch they are in.  Most are in a debt that they will work the majority of their lives trying to get out of.  People don’t get the help they need for mental problems, shortage of food, assistance with rent, money for school or even money for educational advances in culture enrichment.  Middle class families must make choices on a daily basis on luxury or necessity?  And depending on the decision, they will get schooling or a brand new car, food or new shoes, a roof over their head or air conditioning.  I strongly believe that everyone in the class has written a paper on a middle class person because a lower class wouldn’t be in school and an upper class would be in an ivy league.
